10 Swiss cloud-enabled startups to watch in 2020

22.06.2020 07:00, Gianmaria Sbetta

Cloud computing services and technologies have become the backbone IT infrastructure of successful startups such as Airbnb, Coinbase, Robinhood and many more. But which Swiss startups leverage cloud services to offer better products and scale faster? Discover them now!

Cloud computing is the on-demand technology platform that offers computer system resources like data storage, server maintenance, and databases without direct active management by the user. Thanks to initial low-cost IT investment and scalable platforms, cloud infrastructures continue to become more attractive to startups around the globe. The number of available services keeps increasing, and more companies have the opportunity to help society cope with challenges including big data management, cybersecurity, and quality control. In addition, emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, distributed ledger technology, and many other capabilities are becoming available as services through cloud computing.

COVID-19 has also accelerated digital transformation in several industries, and cloud computing, together with the upcoming 5G infrastructure, will transform and enable new innovative business solutions in several industries such as automotive, smart manufacturing, robotics, agritech, and healthcare.

"Cloud computing is the core of Smallpdf's business," comments Christoph Forsting, COO at Smallpdf and winner of the TOP 100 Public Vote in 2018. "With users all around the globe, we process up to 3.5 million tasks per day. With cloud computing, we are more flexible than having our own servers. We automated the up- and downscaling of the numbers of servers, depending on our needs. So, we use more servers at our peak time, when our users in Europe and in the Americas are working at the same time, for example. With our own infrastructure, we would not have this flexibility and probably have more costs."

Venture Leaders Technology alumn Damian Frick, CTO at Seervision, adds: "Cloud deployment is an essential component of our development workflow: from the continuous integration and automated testing that happens in the cloud to ingesting and managing the data that fuels our machine learning algorithms, which we evaluate and train using cloud resources. Furthermore, we are working toward cloud infrastructure in combination with our camera automation solution to enable a production technician to run a full video production from anywhere. This way, we will reduce the hardware footprint that is required on location at a video shoot or at live events. Those two efforts together mean that in the future, video productions will be easier, more affordable, and more scalable."

Venture Kick startup dotphoton has developed an image compression technology that enables real cloud usage for biotech and spacetech companies since current solutions are far too expensive and slow to use the cloud for these kinds of images due to their big file size (from hundreds of MB/ file to 20TB/file).

Lukas Wawrla, Co-founder at Archlet, Zurich-based startup founded by ETH alumni argues states that "Cloud computing is key for our growth because we can dynamically scale the computing power and are able to reduce the calculation time to only a few seconds, increasing speed and a more robust environment for our customers."

Not only ICT or deeptech startups benefit from cloud computing services. For instance, biotech startup Scailyte uses cloud-based computing for their data analytics activities while the agritech company xFarm, delivers better experiences and products to 15.000 customers and partners.
