FemtoTools, a leading developer of nanoindentation instruments, was acquired by Oxford Instruments plc, a renowned provider of high-tech solutions for industry and scientific research, in a transaction valued at CHF 24 million. The acquisition aims to enhance Oxford Instruments' capabilities and expand its product portfolio in the precision measurement sector.
Founded in 2007,
FemtoTools specializes in high-speed, precision, MEMS-based nanoindenters for imaging mechanical properties of intricate microstructures in materials research and semiconductor applications. Their product portfolio includes solutions for metallurgy, thin films, and microsystems technology.
The Engineering startup has been acquired by Oxford Instruments, a global leader in scientific technology for materials analysis, healthcare, life sciences, and semiconductors. FemtoTools will join Oxford Instruments' Imaging and Analysis division, complementing their existing tools like electron microscope micro-analysers and Raman microscopes.
Oxford Instruments is paying CHF 17 million initially, with an additional CHF 7 million contingent on FemtoTools' performance over 33 months. FemtoTools reported CHF 10.6 million in revenue for the year ending December 31, 2023, with a slightly below-average return on sales for the Group.
