Pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) is highly used worldwide for the breeding management of livestock. It is isolated from the blood of pregnant horses in so-called "blood farms" in South America. To obtain PMSG, the amount of blood taken exceeds dramatically what is humanely adequate as animal welfare activists have brought to public attention. To protect these animals and to overcome current shortage in the PMSG supply novel solutions are needed quickly.
