Growing Volatility, Complexity of Renewable Means Opportunity for Pexapark's Energy Marketplace

17.10.2019 08:00, Joseph Heaven

Fewer subsidies and greater volatility in renewable energy trading have increased investors and asset owners' need for Pexapark's management tools and marketplace. China, the country with most installed solar and wind assets, may invest €60 billion in renewable assets annually over the next five years. CEO and co-founder Michael Waldner will meet actors in the sector and court investors for his startup's series B when he roadshows in Hong Kong with the Swiss National Startup Team in November.

Michael Waldner, CEO and co-founder of Pexapark for Venture Leaders

How are you changing the way renewable energy is financed?

Pexapark is building the marketplace for renewable energy sales. As subsidies are rolled back, investors in renewable energies are being exposed to market risks for the first time. They need to secure revenues and sell their energy to the market. This is a complex undertaking. Pexapark's SaaS provides renewable energy investors with the tools to manage their performance on a level with professional energy traders, without the need of owning a large trading organization.

How important is it to be in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is the gateway to Asia, with a strong community of investors in fintech companies. I'm looking forward to meeting equipment manufacturers, software-makers and infrastructure investors in the region's renewable energy sector.

What is the level of investment in renewables in the region?

China is the country with the most installed solar and wind assets. Wind power: new installations of wind assets in China, both onshore and offshore, are expected to remain at about 20 gigawatts (GW) per year for the next five years. That's about a third of all new wind assets installed globally! Solar power: new installations in China will be around 40 GW per year, over the next five years, which is a compound annual growth rate of about 20 percent! If we calculate €1 million investment per megawatt, this means about €60 billion of investment in wind and solar assets in China each year.

What are your goals for the Venture Leaders roadshow?

We'd like to explore potential sales partnerships with renewable energy tech providers to distribute our software. I'm also looking to meet sustainability and B2B software investors with the potential to join our upcoming series B fundraising.
