The city, home to Hong Kong Jockey Club and horse-racing, hosts the first of this year's Venture Leaders startup roadshows in China. Piavita CEO Dorina Thiess will meet vets and investors, as her startup raises the funding to become a leader in the $300 billion equine health industry.
How is Piavita changing health for horses?
Piavita's animal diagnostic system, customized for horses, saves veterinarians hours of manual monitoring, offering long-term insights into each horse's health and greatly increasing the range of diagnoses possible. Our wearable, non-invasive device measures each animal's vital signs – including ECG, core body temperature, heart rate and breathing – continuously and remotely.
The market to digitalize, automate and improve veterinary care for pets, and in particular horses, is wide open. We entered the U.S. and seven European markets last year, and now look to scale globally. We have the chance to position ourselves as global leaders in the veterinary industry.
What are your goals for the roadshows in China?
China is at the forefront for the equine industry and has more than 500 horse clubs today, including the world's biggest – the Hong Kong Jockey Club. The number of jockey clubs, horse racing associations, and horse races is rocketing, and investment in the equine industry is growing 15 to 20 percent every year.
I am keen to learn about the current level of treatment and care for animals in China. I want to get a real insight on how the Chinese market and customers react to our system, and see how prepared the industry is for digitization.
We're also raising a growth round of about $10 million to fund our expansion, so I want to connect with potential investors in the region.
Winning Venture Leaders Technology to Silicon Valley in 2017 which was a one-of-a-kind experience. The outreach, network, and market insights we gained was truly incredible. We also met our investor True Ventures. If the trip to China is just half as good, we will be very happy!
Venture Leaders China 2019 is co-organised by Venturelab and swissnex China, and supported by: digitalswitzerland, EPF Lausanne, ETH Zurich, Gebert Rüf Stiftung, Canton Vaud, VISCHER, and Canton Zurich.
