As 'Made in China 2025' pushes local manufacturers to add LoRaWAN capability to their hardware, LORIOT's Yannik Kopp sees oppportunities to rollout the Swiss startup's infrastructure that helps low-powered devices to communicate over long-range wireless connections.
How is LORIOT changing the Internet-of-Things?
IoT is the largest interoperability challenge ever undertaken -- without security, compatibility and low complexity, IoT solutions will not scale! Our LORIOT network server is the bridge between disparate hardware and software systems. It allows data gathered from the world around us to be routed where it's needed and turned into insights and actions. Our vision is to enable IoT in every corner of the globe by empowering networks using the LoRaWAN communication protocol designed for low-powered devices to communicate with internet-connected apps over long-range wireless connections. As a leading provider of LoRaWAN network infrastructure -- suited to 75 percent of IoT solutions -- we are at the core of the disruptive potential of IoT. Our product lets customers across every vertical implement their own IoT networks to ensure their data stays within their own infrastructure. This is crucial for many industrial corporations, cities and telecom operators.
You're already in 134 countries. What is the scale of your potential in China?
China is a rapidly expanding market and helping to lead the way in IoT. Chinese demand for LoRaWAN connectivity led us to deploy a public server there in 2016 to give local LoRaWAN enthusiasts and companies an easy entry to the technology. We've seen exponential growth there since. A major driver of IoT is government's 'Made in China 2025' initiative, which will move China into producing higher-value products and services. LoRaWAN may play a major role in this movement. Chinese hardware manufacturers are increasingly adding LoRaWAN devices and gateways to their portfolios. We've already formed strategic partnerships with Chinese manufacturers to offer one combined solutions for the regional and the global markets.
What are your goals for the trip?
We are looking for a local partner to helps us replicate our European success in China. We already serve more than 100 customers in Europe and the U.S., and have all the tools ready to help a Chinese partner to achieve the same success. We're especially looking for established companies with know-how in city infrastructure, agriculture, logistics and smart buildings application, that want to expand into IoT and the LoRaWAN technology.
