Meet Venture Leader Mauro Sette's Endovascular Catheter Navigation's Startup

06.05.2019 16:00, Guillaume Tinsel

Ten Venture Leaders will represent Switzerland in Boston in June. Meet Mauro Sette, co-founder and CEO of Medyria. Learn more on "flow features" to localize a catheter within the body and Mauro's expectations on his roadshow in Boston.

Can you introduce yourself, how your company started and what your project is?

My name is Mauro, I am an engineer I studied in Milano and did my PhD in Leuven (Belgium). During the PhD I have been working in the department of robotics where researchers were busy with solving autonomous vehicle problems with the so called SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping). In this type of application sensorized cars moves in unknown environments collecting sensed data and reconstructing maps. The question came quite naturally, can we do the same within the human body?
So was born the idea of using so called "flow features" to localize a catheter within the body.

What attracted you to Boston as a business development destination?

Boston with the MIT is a vibrant city which is a true incubator for startups engaged in the Medtech and Biotech world, I really think Medyria should enter in contact with this world.

What do you hope to achieve from the trip? What are your expectations and goals?

I would like to enlarge my network, finding good contact that will be enablers for the future of my company.

Why is Venture Leaders Life Science beneficial for your startup?

Venture Leaders is an arm extension, I think that in few days it will accelerate the progress of the C series fundraising for Medyria.

What is pushing you towards international expansion?

Medyria would like to enter into the US market which is the biggest market both for acquisitions and sales.

What do you foresee as the largest hurdles towards expansion into the American market?

A big economical hurdles due to the entry barriers like the FDA clearance and the market acceptance. As well as the cost intensive activity for the marketing.

What makes you most nervous or excited about the trip?

Pitching and meeting new people, you do not have a second possibility of making a first good impression.

Do you have a “funny/best day” anecdote about being an entrepreneur?

November 2013, I got a call from a friend in Norway with whom I was collaborating he told me "if you want we are doing an animal trial tomorrow and you can eventually test your system".
We were still a very early startup with a "duct tape" prototype, no money to run an own animal trial. So I jumped on the first flight and went to Oslo. We had the opportunity to test for the first time our system in animal. It worked just fine, I was very excited. That was the beginning!
