IDUN Technologies' Wearable Skin Electrodes Set to Enable the Internet of Humans

22.07.2019 00:00, Joseph Heaven

As the explosion in wearables boosts demand for skin electrodes beyond $5 billion, IDUN Technologies CEO Simon Bachmann looks to win Chinese investment and advisers to boost his startup's sales of skin-friendly dry electrodes.

How is IDUN Technologies changing the skin electrode market?
Almost 300 million wearable devices were sold in 2018. All of them have the same two requirements: high signal quality and high wear comfort. Up until now, this was always an either/or trade-off. Our Dryode technology combines high signal quality – highly conductive materials, maximized skin contact – with a comfortable wear experience, through flexible, stretchable, skin-conformal materials. Additionally, our materials reduce motion artifacts, which is especially important in sports diagnostics or long-term monitoring. They even work underwater, our electrode were used for the world's first ECG on a diver, 42 meters underwater.

You estimate the global skin electrode market to be worth $5 billion. What is the scale of your potential in China?
China is the largest market for wearable devices, with around 28 percent of the global demand, and our biggest target market. The country is central for global manufacturing, and home to more and more globally-active makers of wearables, such as Xiaomi and Huawei. I am confident we will become the biggest electrode suppliers for biometric wearables. We already have projects in Taiwan and currently seek corporate partners for R&D proejct in Guangdong and mainland China.

What are your goals for the roadshows?
I want to return with my bag full of opportunities: R&D projects on cutting-edge Chinese wearables; customer orders for our electrodes; and contacts with local manufacturers and distributors. I want to win Chinese investment from active, hands-on investors, who'll help us expand into China. We are looking to raise $1.5m now, and lay the foundations and contacts for a round of about $5 million in the future.
