The cleantech investment landscape has changed significantly in the past couple years, placing a greater emphasis on powerful software and sensor platforms, and tools built for domestic use. Many of the latest greentech entrepreneurs are developing environmentally-friendly technologies in energy, big data, home automation, and the internet-of-things.
Our industry partner Swiss Prime Site, Switzerland’s leading listed real estate company, was looking for pioneering startup ideas in the sustainability and cleantech sectors. This included B2B-solutions in energy efficiency, renewable energy, energy storage, energy infrastructure, efficient buildings, and sustainable transport.
More than 50 startups from Switzerland and neighboring countries applied for Swiss Prime Site's two-day Accelerator Workshop. Eight were selected to pitch to executives from Swiss Prime Site and its group companies in Zurich.
"The diversity of business ideas shows how extensive and abundant the still-young cleantech sector is, and how much potential it offers," said Swiss Prime Site Corporate Ventures Partner Manager Bastian Zarske Bueno. "The challenge in the coming years will be for this sector to find attractive business models for the range of applications. We are pleased to have been able to already develop some promising fundamentals for this at our workshop."
The jury selected Airlite, Anerdgy, Clemap and Lumoview to develop proofs-of-concept and pitch them at a second day of the workshops to Swiss Prime Site's Management Board. The Acceleration Workshop benefited both Swiss Prime Site and the startups, as Silvan Siegrist, co-founder of Lumoview explained: "During the Swiss Prime Site Accelerator Workshop we collaborated closely with a Swiss Prime Site mentor to concretize our business case proposal. Our mentor was very helpful and asked the right people within Swiss Prime Site to get valuable, additional answers. These insights helped us understand their pains and benefits at a level that wouldn't have been possible otherwise. We very much look forward to our continuing collaboration!"
Pascal Kienast, co-founder of Clemap, confirmed the workshop's advantages “Swiss Prime Site’s and Venturelab's accelerator was intense, extremely well-structured, and time-efficient. The passionate coaching from SPS' experts was of high value, as we learnt in detail about the existing customer pains, and how to adapt our product and services accordingly.”
