Three innovative startups reach the final at the Mars Habitat Challenge 2024

From spatial awareness systems to sustainable energy solutions and robot monitoring, the Mars Habitat Challenge invited three innovative startups to present solutions and business models that could support the creation of a self-sustaining habitat on Mars or other planets.

On May 3rd, the Hagerbach Test Gallery hosted the fourth Mars Habitat Challenge, a competition highlighting innovative solutions that could make life on Mars possible. The journey leading up to this year's event began in March when ten startups were selected by a jury that featured experts from the Hagerbach Test Gallery. The top five underwent a public voting system where they asked their networking contacts and stakeholders to vote for them. Three companies—Algorized, Neology, and RoBoa—were designated the three finalists for this year's edition to present their revolutionary solutions within an underground space featuring a network of tunnels and caverns that extend to 5 kilometres in length.

During the audience voting process, RoBoa was declared the overall winner and will set up a CHF 10,000 pilot at the gallery. The Zurich-based startup is developing an innovative solution to revolutionise confined space exploration with advanced robotics, minimizing downtime and increasing operational safety. Recognized for its potential to drive innovation across borders, the startup also emerged as the final winner at the AIT India-Swiss Camp in February.

"RoBoa won the Mars Habitat Challenge 2024 with an extremely innovative new technology to explore hard to reach zones, even in very confined spaces underground. We are looking forward to run the proof of concept inside our Hagerbach Test Gallery and help the founders with our industry network to develop their startup RoBoa," commented Dr. Michael Kompatscher, Director of Hagerbach Test Gallery.

Alexander Kübler, Co-Founder of RoBoa, highlighted: "We are excited to have won the Mars Habitat Challenge! It was an incredible opportunity to think beyond 'down-to-earth applications' and network with multiple industry stakeholders. We are eager to test and demonstrate our robot in the Hagerbach Test Gallery, which is the perfect testing environment for Earth and Mars applications. A big thank you to Hagerbach, Venturelab, the competing startups, and everyone who contributed to the Mars Habitat Challenge!"
