Meet Christian Boehm, Co-Founder of Mondaic. The technology startup offers modern software and services for the simulation, analysis, and inversion of mechanical as well as sound waves across all scales. Christian and the other nine Swiss National Technology Team members will fly to Silicon Valley in April.

“Try again.
Fail again.
Fail better.”
Can you tell us who your product or solution helps, and how?
We enable operators of infrastructure such as bridges or wind turbines to see through sound. The innovative technology we develop at Mondaic infers 3-D models of the interior of an asset from ultrasonic measurements, detects flaws and analyzes the material properties. It’s like giving them superman’s vision to look inside their assets and see failures before they occur.
What market are you addressing and what is the potential of your startup in that market?
Our technology is already well-established for geophysical applications to analyze seismic waves. But there is a huge potential which remains untapped so far. Ageing infrastructure is ubiquitous. Our target market here forms the intersection of nondestructive testing, computer-assisted engineering, and cloud computing. Applying our technology for ultrasonic inspections on a variety of assets will routinely contribute to a safer and more sustainable infrastructure.
How and where did you come up with the idea for your startup?
It all started at ETH Zurich where my co-founders and I shared an office. We were studying seismic waves emitted by earthquakes for our joint research and then realized that the same physics applies across the scales: From millimeter precision in ultrasound to seismic waves on Mars.
What do you expect from the Venture Leaders roadshow, and how do you think it will help you achieve your vision?
The Venture Leaders roadshow is a unique chance for us. Participating in the program is a fantastic opportunity to propel Mondaic’s fundraising strategy, and to boost the market entry of our W-Scan technology in the US.
What are your team’s key achievements to date?
We have successfully bootstrapped a team of 11, and we have entered a strategic partnership with Shearwater GeoServices. Fueled by the success of geophysical applications, our fantastic team is now bringing our solutions for ultrasonic inspections to the next level.
Is there a key principle or value that guides you as you build your company?
At Mondaic, we believe in the power of innovation and collaboration. We foster a culture of continuous learning and creativity. By empowering our team members, partners, and clients, we can develop ideas into solutions and achieve far greater success together.
What is the most important lesson you have learned as a founder?
It is very simple in the words of Samuel Beckett: “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” Resilience, the ability to quickly learn from others, and the willingness to constantly adapt are crucial to sailing through startup waters.
What is your favorite productivity hack or tool and why?
Kanban boards to organize my tasks – and dedicate focus time to get them done.
What was your dream job when you were a child?
I wanted to become an architect – but a real one and not just for software.
